Marriage of the Waters Barrel

This is a depiction of the vessel from the New York historical Societies permanant collection. It was used in a ceremony upon completion of the Erie Canal. Water from lake Erie was "Married' with the water of the Hudson River.

This paper mache chair was based on an elaborately carved and gilded chair that  was originally part of a suite that Marie- Antoinette ordered in 1779 for her private apartments at Versailles.
